If you’ve decided to take your training to the next level, you may be thinking about including an anabolic steroid in your program.
The problem is there’s a huge choice of different drugs for each purpose and the one you choose may be simply a matter of personal preference.
Winstrol, also known as stanozolol, is a popular anabolic steroid which can achieve great results during a cutting cycle. It’s often used instead of anavar because it’s both cheaper and more widely available.
But how does Winstrol work? Here’s a closer look at this powerful cutting steroid.
The chemical composition
Anabolic steroids come in different forms, and Winstrol is a type of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) derivative. This DHT hormone undergoes two fundamental changes which transform it into the potent Winstrol steroid.
The first change involves the replacement of the 3-keto group, introducing instead an attached pyrazol group at the A-ring. The 17th carbon position also includes a structural change, common with orally administered steroids, adding in a methyl group to classify Winstrol as a C17-alpha alkylated (C17-aa) anabolic steroid.
These very fundamental changes to the composition means that the androgenicity is lowered while simultaneously pumping up its anabolic effect.
Another important factor is the formation of DHT in the first place. It is created when testosterone comes into contact with the 5 alpha reductase enzyme, transforming testosterone into DHT. Although testosterone is often heralded as the king, DHT is actually more powerful. And the particular relevance for bodybuilders is that once the conversion has taken place, it renders DHT completely impervious to the aromatase enzyme. This means that for Winstrol, aromatization will never occur and there will be no estrogenic effects such as gynecomastia.
How does it affect the body?
Many anabolic steroids have the desirable effect of lowering the amount of Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) but the impact from Winstrol is far greater than most. Even at relatively low doses, and within just days of starting a cycle, Winstrol has been shown to drop SHBG by as much as 50%.
Reducing SHBG is very significant because without so much of this circulating around the body, not only is more of the steroid able to arrive in an unbound state but free testosterone also increases. This is one of the biggest effects that Winstrol has when taken both orally or when injected.
One of the first things a bodybuilder learns about is the importance of protein, but an essential component of this is nitrogen retention. Without a positive balance of nitrogen in the body, the muscle is unable to grow and acquire mass. Winstrol has a positive effect by helping to both retain greater levels of nitrogen, as well as promoting protein synthesis.
Winstrol also has the effect of boosting red blood cell circulation and lowering glucocorticoid hormones. This is not quite as marked with Winstrol as with other steroids, but nevertheless certainly contributes to the overall results which can be achieved.
