When choosing a stallion it is important for the mare owner to know the strengths and weaknesses of the stallion they choose. Most breed organizations inspect their stallions for breeding. If the stallion doesn't pass the inspection his offspring can't be registered with the breed organization. In Ireland the Irish Horse Registry is governed by the Irish Horse Board. Since 1995, unlike other countries, with an Irish Draught horse registry, the Irish Draught Horse must be both tested for conformation and performance before he is approved as a breeding stallion. At the present time no other country makes a performance test a requirement for Irish Draught stallion breeding approval. When choosing your stallion don't hesitate to ask for inspection scores. Don't settle for other hyped halter class scores that have nothing to do with a stallion's inspection for breeding approval. If the stallion hasn't been approved by the Irish Horse board the offspring can't be registered with the prestigious Irish Horse Registry.
